Ignition Key Switch

Have been having no problems at all with the key ignition switch then yesterday was ready to leave work and the key would only turn from 'lock' to 'acc' and I tried turning the steering wheel and pushed in on the mechanism on the underside of the column that allows the shifter to be moved then tried to turn the key again with the shifter in neutral. It still would only move from lock to acc. What could cause that? Thanks in advance for any help.
