I Can't Extend Monitor Using Windows Xp On Laptop.

Purchased this and went to install only to find out that I cannot get the monitor to extend. I watched several videos ohn how to do this and I am beginning to wonder if it is not working because of my vesrion of windows (XP)possibly not supporting it? I felt like I was doing everything correctly but the laptop was not saving the new settings. I was able to see projcted my wall paper and the background of the screen but not icons. Any help appreciated.
