Wi-fi Problems With Linksys Router

My daughter's brand-new Satellite P55-A5200 is having problems staying connected to our Linksys router. The router is a 10-year-old Linksys WRT54GS v2.11 802.11 b/g (not n) device. Our modem is a Motorola cable modem. The router works well with all other devices in the house (an HP laptop, an older Toshiba laptop, an iPhone 4 and and an iPad 2). My daughter's computer works well on the wi-fi at college and at other hotspots. What happens is this: the wi-fi stays connected, but every few minutes, a yellow exclamation point appears on the wif-fi notification area and the connection is "limited". No web pages can be opened. She has to disconnect and reconnect. The troubleshooter says that the "default gateway is not available".

Hi, it sounds like the problem resides with the laptop, rather than the router. One thing to try is to either update the wireless adapter's driver (if a newer version is available) or to reinstall the driver version you have now. You should be able to get these drivers from the Toshiba website.

If you are using a third-party wireless utility (such as one from Toshiba that came with the laptop) try disabling this program and just using the native Windows utility, Wireless Zero, to see if the problem still occurs.

If neither of those things resolve the issue, you may want to purchase a cheap ($10 or $20) USB wireless adapter, disable the computer's internal adapter, and connect this adapter to use for wireless. If the problem does not occur anymore, then at least you've isolated it to the computer's internal wireless adapter.
