if the entire picture content is compressed into a bright vertical line (centered horizontally) then turn the TV off. This bright line will damage the center section of the TV, and when the connection to the horizontal yoke is fixed then that part of the TV screen will be black forever.
If the picture is OK in the section you can see, but the edges are blanked out, then you might be watching a 4X3 format on a 16X9 screen and these black bars are normal. you can change the format to fill the picture out, but this will make the characters fatter or if you put int in "zoom" then the top and bottom will be off screen (use the "aspect" button).
