If this is the first time it's been used, make sure that:

- The spark plug boot is attached to the spark plug
- The correct oil (SAE 30) has been added to the oil reservoir
- Fresh, new unleaded gas has been added to the gas tank
- If it won't start using the key switch, try starting it manually
- Make sure the battery and/or fuse are installed (if applicable for your model)

If you've checked all that and it still won't start, there are many other factors that could potentially prevent your mower from starting (even though they are highly unlikely on a brand new mower).

One possible cause of the mower not starting at all is a bad spark plug. Spark plugs usually only cost a few bucks, so it's not a big investment to try a new one and see if that gets your mower to start. (You can find instructions for replacing the spark plug here.)

If neither of those solutions helps, try spraying some starting fluid into the carburetor (with the air filter removed and the mower off) then put the filter back on and try starting the mower -- if it starts then dies, there is probably a blockage in the carb, or a problem with the fuel.

If nothing else has worked, attach a spark plug tester to your spark plug to see if the plug is getting electricity. If it's not, there's a problem before the spark plug, with one of the internal electrical components.
