If your mower starts but won't stay running, it's likely either a problem in the fuel tank/fuel line or carburetor. Try flushing the gas tank and carburetor, giving the carburetor a good cleaning to make sure no holes are clogged, and checking the fuel hose for burrs or blockages. Then fill the gas tank with new, fresh gas and give the mower a try.

One way you can test if it's the carburetor is to start the mower then pump the primer -- if the mower runs as long as you press the primer bulb but then dies as soon as you stop, there is a clog or blockage inside the carburetor.

If it's a new mower, the air filter probably isn't the culprit, but if the above solution doesn't work, check the air filter to be sure it's not dirty, and either clean or replace it.
