4wd Problem On A 08' Suzuki Grand Vitara Awd

i have a popping noise coming from the front wheels when its in 4H but put it into 4H lock or 4L lock it doesnt pop at all.  Now one of the wheels is stuck in 4wd and it is frying my transfer case fluid.  what could possibly be the problem?
