My Discmanesp2 Compact Player De705

I have just started using my player after a few months gap, I have put new batteries in but all I can get is the words HOLD on the screen, nothing else os happening?

It sounds like the hold switch is on. Most CD players have a hold switch on them to prevent you from pressing buttons when you have it in your pocket or in a bag. It's likely located on the side of the player.
