Sacd Low Level

When playing a cd or the cd layer of a hybrid SACD the sound from the phono sockets is fine, but when playing the SACD layer (2 channel) the level drops significantly. Is this normal (in which case the machine is not fit for the purpose I bought it), or is there a fault, or incorrect setting?
