Singer Brilliance 6160 - Sewing Problem

On a Singer Brilliance 6160 : Hook catches and pulls thread to the right, and down, but when it releases the thread and comes back up (hook) .... the thread doesn't come up to the left .. it sort of stays there ... and tangles behind the spool ... etc ???
