8% Tax Setup

I'm trying to figure out to how set the 8% tax rate and save it in my register. The way I have it set up now, it only applies tax to ONE dollar.. so if I were to type in 2.00 and hit my tax button, it only still applies .08 cents for tax when it should be higher since it's 2 dollars. I need a run down of how to apply it to the register for 8
