Turntable Stopped Turning

Had the microwave for several years. Not the turntable has stopped working. It moved in fits and starts for a couple of weeks, now it doesn't seem to want to turn at all. I'm guessing it's probably a stripped or broken belt/gear. Can teh belt/motor be checked without removing the entire cover? Is it a uers-servicable item? If not, how much would a repair be likely to cost (assuming it si a belt or gear.) A new microwave is relatively cheap, but the environmentalist/cheapskate i me has a hard time accepting that I need to chuck what is essentially a working appliance because a minor part wore out...
