Bad Reception
Does this system need an antena to get better reception?

I would look for dry joints between the aerial socket and the tuner module circuit board. Try blowing hot air from a hair dryer over it, the fault maybe temperature related. If that causes it to go off, then spray a section at a time with aerosol freezer.
No no need for antenna.
