If you want to destroy a drive just use an electric drill through it with about a 12mm bit.. Works every time. There are numerous torx screws on the drive with one hidden under the drive cover sheet. I am assuming that the drive is not in a case.
However if you want to pass it on to someone or sell it the a low level format will delete the data so it cannot be recovered. Look on the net for Hard disk Low level format tool on HD guru. I use this program all the time to erase disks. 'Nuke it' is another.There others which you can probably obtain to delete the drive to US security levels which will come up on a net search.
