external drive does not show in "my computer as a devise

If the drive spins up and appears to run then you can try..

Connect the drive to a known working USB port.

Disconnect the drive and open your control panel. Remove all references to any unknown USB device's shown there, which would show at the bottom of device manager in Widows XP..

Remove any installation software you may have installed.

Restart the computer without the drive attached and then after it has completed rebooting then insert your drive which is powered up into any USB port and see if your problem has been resolved. If you still have no luck then you may have a problem with the interface card in the hard drive cage. Raise another question with more information if you have no success.
