Drive Disconnects On Imac 10.8.5

Hi, The drive is connected directly via USB2 port on iMac 2.5 GHz i5, 20GB, 10.8.5. I've tried turning off all Energy saving fuctions while backing up to the drive, but it alwasy disconnects. New drive out of the box. Any ideas? Thanks! Greg
