Color Wheel, Lamp Or Both?

Here is a way to determine if the color wheel is making the noise. you can put your ear down near the back lower cover and have someone turn it on. You should hear the cooling fans start-up first, then the color wheel will spin-up. as soon as it locks onto the correct speed, the lamp will start to glow. Then when it's fully on have the person turn it off, the lamp turns off and the color wheel spins down while the cooling fans run for several more minutes. The actuator will sound like a vibrator, it will not change speeds like a bad color wheel will.
If you heard the color wheel change speeds then it could cause a good lamp to flicker, but this is rare since if the color wheel doesn;t maintain the correct speed the set will normally turn off. If a lamp is getting weak it will be hard to re-start. a strong lamp can be turned on, off, back on and start up the first time. A weak lamp may need to set for several minutes before it will re-start.
Finally it is possible to have a weak lamp and a bad color wheel, and there is also a possibility that the DMD board is failing too (sorry to bring that up). I have seen a couple times a DMD board fail and only after trying a new lamp, ballast, and color wheel only to find the problem is still there. The multitude of symptoms caused by a bad board makes it impossible to rule it out. most of the time this board either has a bad picture or the set can not stay on or it may be hard starting up.
