i can print from my nashua aficio mp 171 spf printer but it is not giving me the scanner icon on my computer, using windows xp

Hello, you will need to manually set up scanning in order to be able to use it. This HelpOwl answer has instructions for setting up scanning to your computer (though the instructions will vary slightly since your MP 171's screen is smaller than most Ricoh multifunction printers) and this page has instructions for setting up scanning to email.
