Short Battery Life. Is It Normal.

I just started using a brand new rca RP5025. The freshly charged AAA batteries which lasted 10 hours or more in my old recorder until yesterday when it stopped working are at 1/4 full after only an hour of use. During this time I was on pause for 45 minutes. Yesterday when I was installing all the start up menu stuff for about 1.5 hours the batteries almost ran out and I put in newly charged ones. My batteries were fine yesterday with the old recorder. Does it actually shut off. There is no off button so does it draw down the battery when not in use? For instance overnight when it is "off".
