How Do I Get Sound From My Tv Directly Through The Mx3900d Using Ps3 Or Tv

i have a ps3 connected to the tv hdmi, i cant get sound from the ps3 through the mx3900 unless i connect a modulator box to the ps3, when im watching tv i cant get sound in stereo from the tv through the mx3900 when watching tv unless i am watching a dvd, I dont think I know how to hook it up properly, I should not need the modulator box the tv is HD and the PS3 is PS3
