How To Best Connect This Tv To An External Surround System?

My brother has tried unsuccessfully to connect two different external soundbar/subwoofer speaker sytems...a SONY and a Panasonic...to this TV. The HDMI connection failed because the TV does not have an HDMI/ARC output. The digital coaxial output (SPDIF) from the TV also produced no sound. He apparently tried every possible option, including a digital audio coaxial to digital optical cable converter with no luck. Has anyone else experienced this problem and found an answer? What is the optimal answer for an external connection? Do the TV settings need to change to allow an external connection? Thanks.
