I hear where you're coming from when you say "are they sadly being made even cheaper these days?" I think this is definitely the case.
I also have the WMR100N (WMR100NA) weather station using the included WGR800 Anemometer, and although I have had more issues with the temp sensor and the rain gauge connecting to the base station of the WMR100NA, I have also had my fair share of issues with the wind sensor connecting as well.
I would try the reset method again, and have the wind sensor within 10 feet of the base station when you do the resets. Make sure you reset the wind sensor itself first, and then reset the base station right after. The base station should pick up a reading of 0.0 from the sensor once it is connected. You can try to blow on the sensor to see if it reads anything, keeping in mind that it only updates its readings every 14 seconds or so, so it needs to be spinning for at least that long for it to read anything.
If you have luck and it connects, the base station signal bars will still be flashing for another minute or so before it locks in with the sensors for good. Don't move the sensor any further away until the signal meters on the base station stop flashing when it is doing its sensor search after you reset it. I usually leave my sensors close to the base station for about 5 minutes after I do the reset before I move them back outdoors to their mounting locations.
Hope this helps!
