Coolant Flow

I changed my thermostat and flushed the system, now the coolant will not go throught the engine properly, the top hose is very hard and no flow is going smooth. the temp gauge stays on "C" and the fan comes on once I start the car. what do I need to do?

Sometimes thermostats won't open after you flush the system and put in a new one. Warm the car up to operating temperature and then rev it a few times to get the coolant flowing. If that doesn't work, tap on the thermostat housing with a rubber mallet or the wooden handle of your hammer. That will sometimes get the thermostat to open up.

If those tricks don't work, recheck what you did. Did you buy the correct temperature range thermostat for your car? See what the temperature is on the old thermostat (180 degrees, 195 degrees, etc.). Is that the same as the one you put in the car?

Did you put in enough coolant? Wait until the car is cool and open the radiator cap. Topping it off before you start the car isn't enough. As soon as you start the car, the coolant will flow out of the radiator and circulate throughout the system.

The last idea is that maybe you put the thermostat in upside down. Very easy to do that. If all of the above ideas do not work, open it up and check to see that the thermostat is going in the right direction.

P.S. You can tell if the thermostat is in the right direction by the cone. The cone part points up and goes into the housing attached to the hose. The spring part goes in the opening on the engine block.
