Car Continues To Over Heat. Have Added Antifreeze. Should I Be Diluting 50/50?

I have used antifreeze that says it does not need to be diluted, but the manual suggests 50% water & 50% antifreeze. Could this be a problem? I can't locate the thermostat to see if it is the problem. Any suggestions?

The car will overheat if the thermostat doesn't open. The best way to check that is to warm up the car and then turn on the heat to the highest setting. If it comes out hot, your thermostat is working. If it comes out cool or warm, then the thermostat is probably clogged with sediment or defective and not  opening.

Another way to check is by placing your hand (carefully) on the top radiator hose. If it's cool after you've run the car for five minutes, then the thermostat isn't opening to let the coolant circulate throughout the system.

As for the coolant, never dilute the 50/50 coolant mixture. It's already half water, so no need to dilute it. I always buy full strength coolant and dilute it myself. The 50/50 coolant is a rip off. They charge $8.00 for 50/50 coolant and $12.00 for full strength coolant. The full strength is a better deal and you can add it full strength if you have to.

One more thing. How are you adding coolant? Don't rely on the overflow bottle to add coolant. Sometimes they plug up and none of the coolant is drawn into the radiator. The best way is to remove the radiator cap (when the car is cool) and check the level. If it isn't full, top it off.
