Possible Broken Valve Spring

Replaced engine approx 7yrs ago; 40K on new engine; engine=3.4L 6cyl; recently died on frwy=started choking, sounding like running out of gas, then losing power, loud thumping noise. Towed to mech who says broken valve spring (@least 1) but may have damaged valves, or bent piston, won't know til opened up + check heads = Minimum $1200-$1400 + 1wk to repair.. Does this sound right, new engine probably $900 +labor?? A friend tells me I can go to pick-a-part and get a spring and rod, because that is the worst you will probably find is a bent rod..total repair probably $200-$300???? Wondering what to do next?? Suggestions????
