Hi, Have A Nordic Tract Elliptical, It Hums Continuously When Off

Hi, have a Nordic Tract elliptical 990 autostrider, when you finish your work out, it automatically shuts off after a brief time as it should, the display console turns off, BUT the motor or brake?? keeps on making a soft humming sound and never shuts off., this sound is from the rear Wheel Area. So I have to unplug the machine after each workout. Shouldn't the whole machine shut off ?? What is the problem? any help appreciated, dont want to use electricity when not in use, or have it maybe overheat and burn up. Thanks Steve
