Does the phone work otherwise?

This could be a defective wall transformer.  If the transformer is not providing enough juice to fully charge the phone it may seem like it's not holding a charge.

You can try another wall tranformer.  As long as the rated output voltage is the same and the current rating is the same or higher it will work.  Also be sure the connector fits and that the pins are the same (positive on the center or negative on center, it varies).

Normal recharge time for current battery technologies is 13 hours.  If after 13 hours on the charger (over night is good) the phone still has a poor charge you need to check the wall transformer and then the charging circuits on the base unit.  You won't be able to test the charging circuits so you can either take the entire unit into a service shop or bite the bullet and buy a new one.  If you decide on anew one see if you can find with with Litium Ion batteries.
