Suv Problems

my dads 1998 mountaineer keeps cutting out once he puts it into gear.  It has 277,000 miles on it and he has had it for 13 years. He also replaced the motor with a rebuilt one. i hope its not a costly repair because he's supposed to give me the truck while he buys a newer one. Im not sure what the problem is? Need some advice...
