Contaminated Water Filter/tank/line?

We inherited an LFX25971SW in the purchase of a new home. Approximately 4 months after we moved in, brownish/whitish flaky-looking material began coming out of the water dispenser. I immediately removed the old filter and attempted to dispense water, which also came out with particulate matter in it. Thinking it might be upstream of the filter, I put a new filter in. There was still particulate matter in the water, so the problem must be downstream of the filter. What do I do next? Does this unit have a line or tank that might be contaminated and that I could replace? Thanks so much for whatever help you can offer! Steve
