Uses Colour Ink Even Though I Print Only Black And White

Hi, I notice that my printer eats through colour cartridges even though I never print in colour. I made sure all the options are switched to grey scale only but it still seems to use the colour cartridge, so every so often I have to replace it. Why is this? Neil

This is a common complaint regarding a lot of printers, from different manufacturers.

The official explanation is that even B&W print jobs need some colour ink to attain a "true" black. A less-official theory is that this is cash-grab engineering from the manufacturers, since printer ink ends up costing users more than the machines, especially colour ink.

You can try double-checking all the options in your printer software; there may be another "use black ink only" or similar setting that could reduce the use of colour. You could also contact the manufacturer about it, especially if the printer is still under warranty.

If the warranty has expired, you could try replacing the colour cartridge with another B&W cartridge to save some cash, and see what happens. Some people have said this has worked for them.
