Compatability

I have an imac desktop computer and am wondering if it's possible to get all of my videos off of my JVC camcorder from the hard drive onto my new imac computer. I am scard to hook it up and try it b/c in the past, as soon as I hook up the camcorder to a computer (it was my old computer of course)...then all the video files automatically get deleted from the camcorder itself. I am trying to avoid all my videos being deleted and making sure they will transfer over to my imac...all of them, in-tact
