M51 9 Flashes On Wrench Icon

I have a m51 that has sat for many years and is now i need again i originally figured it would need new batteries because it jas sat for so long i plugged in the charger and let it sit for a few hours and then unplugged it to see if they were taking a charge now when i press the power button it appears that i am getting 9 flashes from the wrench icon. What can i do before having to pay someone to look at this is there anythink that i should check could it be the batteries or what
