Hotpoint Gas Range, Today It Vibrated, Smoked And Melted The Electrical Cord

We have had this unit for 4 years, we had electrical problems immediately after installation and technican assured us there was no problem.  We changed to a direct outlet with power strip with fuse.  This seemed to resolve the problem until today.  My husband smelled smoke, the teakettle on top of the range vibrated, smoked rolled from behind the unit, the electrical cord melted apart.  He immediately cut the power at the breaker box, and it took several hours to remove the smoke, smell still lingers.  The unit is unplugged and we are able to use the stovetop by lighting burner when needed.  I do not want to purchase a new unit if this has been a recalled unit and should have been repaired.  Please advise.
