Normally one would right click on the desktop and enter the properties. You then see a screen where the desktop is one of the tabs. Select this and one should see various options for the screen display. If you want a specific picture then you browse for the file/image you want and select it. It will then appear. I have attached a link to HP which may help with setting up and solve any future problems.
