My Laptop Is Currently Very Slow. How Do I Fix This

Since March 2012, my laptop has been extremely slow. I type faster than it can process which leads to Word, Outlook, and Excel crashing. Searching through folders on Windows Explorer is also a trying experience, with the program often crashing. The computer often crashes (at least once a week). The annoying thing is that this phenomenon started in March. Before then, it was a very good laptop. It was fast with a lot of processing power at hand, which was a pleasure to work with.
