How Do I Install A Printer?????

I am currently trying to install the HP deskjet D1500 series printer to my laptop but it is not working. when I insert the cable into the port the laptop recognizes it and says that my printer is ready, but nothing else from there. when I press "print" the document says printing but there is no sound, the printer doesnt take the paper, nothing happens. I've checked that everything is on, ink in the cartridge. I just dont know what to do. This is not my printer, could that be the reason, because I dont have the installation disk??
