Hp Photosmart C5280 Printer Gives Carriage Jam Message.

Though this is an older model, it has worked fine for over a year. Previously it was owned by somebody who did not need it (nor was it used). The carriage jam message appears when I power up, asks me to remove whatever (though there isn't any paper stuck inside) and to then start a test page. It then initiates a test page prompt without me, but does not accomplish it. I've tried all remedies available from HP. None of the buttons work, and I must remove the power cord to turn it off. It is out of warranty.
