Rear Axel Lubrication

We are the only owners of a 2001 GMC Savana Van. It has begun making rear noises & my husband wants to lubricate the rear axel. He has looked in the vehicle manual but it does not suggest a brand of lubricant or any other suggestions to maintain the rear end.

Any brand of 80W-90 gear oil will work. First, there is a plug in the rearend cover. Remove it. If a trickle of oil comes out or you stick your fingertip in and can touch the oil pooled inside then the rear dif is not low and your problem lies elsewhere. If this or the noise continues after changing the rear diff oil, try checking out the pinion bearing and the u-joints.

If you agree that the answer I provided is correct please remember to "accept" and/or mark it as "helpful" so I know I'm doing a good job. Thank you, I would really appreciate it.
