Hello weasel635 - Two things to consider…when was the last time the filter was cleaned? Most dishwashers have a glass trap located in the center of the filter designed to collect pieces of broken glass, straws, bones and pits. Simply grasp handle, lift out, empty and place it back. Is the unit making a grinding noise? If so, contact a professional because you may possibly have a defective drain motor.
