2001 Ford Taurus Sel
My 2001 Ford Taurus SEL, has a burning smell on the passenger side, the battery light is on, and the steering is difficult

Sounds like your serpentine belt is slipping or it broke. The serpentine belt drives the alternator and the power steering pump, so that's why the battery light is on and you are having steering problems. It would also have a burnt smell if it was slipping or out of alignment.
Not too hard to replace, if you know what you are doing. You should be able to Google how to do it and where the belt goes onto the various parts it drives.
