1994 Expl Destroys Alternators And Starters How To Wire Relay?

I s uspect the starter relay was wired wrong. Witch side is positive? The tire place that replased the starter cut the sensor wire from the battery to the starter relay and provided wires sticking out of the hood. To start the truck connect the wires and as soon as the engen starts disconnect them, or the starter will not disengage. How can I correct this?
