how to check transmission fluid?

Take the car for a short drive to warm it up. Then check the fluid level when it is idling in park. Make sure the car is on a level surface or your reading will be off. Pull out the tranny dipstick and check the fluid level. The tranny dipstick is usually behind the engine and next to the firewall. The dipstick handle is usually red.
If it's low, add fluid into the tube where you pulled out the tranny dipstick. You will need a long funnel to do that. Most auto parts stores sell funnels specifically for adding tranny fluid to a vehicle.
If the fluid level is okay, check the color and smell of the fluid. It should be reddish and it should not have a burnt smell to it. If it is brownish or has a burnt smell to it, you will have to flush the fluid and install a new transmission filter.
