To remove a friend off your friends list you can click their name and go to their page. Scroll to the bottom of the page where on the bottom left there will be a "remove from friends list" option.

Another way would be to click the account button on the top right of the screen and click edit friends. Once you do that, on the right side of your screen there is "Lists" and under that there is friends. Click "friends." A list will pop up and you can just click the "X" next to the person's name you want to delete from your list.
