How Do I Avoid Pop-up Message Box For One-on-one Chats?

Interested in knowing how to avoid pop-up msgs when I'm on FB? I'm not always in the mood to chat one on one, and find it distracting and annoying when I log on and the msg box pops up. How do others on FB know when I'm on line? How can I turn that feature off? THANK YOU!

You should be able to click on the Chat bar at the bottom and click on the Gear symbol at the top and select Go Offline or Uncheck Available to Chat.

You can change your settings so you appear offline. Then the only way people can chat with you is if you chat with them first.
