Subwoofer Won't Play

I just purchased a subwoofer to play with my Denon. I cannot get the subwoofer to receive a signal. Tried everything in the manual and online forums (small speakers, etc.). Put the subwoofer on my Sony in another room and it worked great. What am I missing? Also, I'm only running two front speakers in stereo with the Denon in my home office. The Sony is in my media room and is using 5.1 with full complement of speakers. Does that make a difference?
