Bad Ram Socket?

Hi! I have a Dell Inspiron M5010 that failed on me suddenly. 4 beeps led me to believe it is a ram issue. Here's the thing: I have two 2g cards. Either card in slot 1 (the slot nearest the motherboard) works fine, so I think my memory is good. However, when I put either card in slot 2, I'm back to 4 beeps. So I think I have a bad card socket. Does that happen? How easily can I fix this with limited tools and know how? I'm a student on an island with limited resources and no computer repair store... Thanks! Nash

Hi Nash,

Since you already tried replacing the RAM modules, the issue may rely on the motherboard, on the socket where you connect the memories to. I would try a motherboard power drain (disconnect all peripherals, power cord and battery, press and hold the power button for a minute) and then retry. If after all this troubleshooting the issue persists you may require a part replaced on your computer.

Forgive me if I replied in the wrong format, I couldn't see another way to reply without answering my own question. o.O

It's not too much RAM, the laptop was running fine for a year before this with both 2gb card in it.

I tried a powerdrain, well over a minute per recomendation. No luck. I guess it's deeper into the hardware. I'll have to run it on 2gb until the next time I can get to the states and a computer repair shop. Thank you so much for the help! Great community here!

Hi there. You are exceeding the maximum memory limit allowed to be installed on your computer. you may find that the maximum size of ram allowed to be installed is 3g and yours add up to 4g.
