Rear Brakes On A 2010 Traverse

I bought a 2010 traverse in nov. 19 it had 19000 miles on it.  We put about 10,000 miles on it and i heard the back brakes grinding. There was no warning sound at all. We put about 10,000 miles on it ( all road miles) . The shop had to put new brakes and rotors on it. They could not answer why this would happen.  I am wondering if there is a problem with the back brakes and if this will happen again?  We only drive this when we leave town and don't want this to happen in some unknown place. Thank you,    Cindee
