Engine Check Light On,

my daughters chev cobalt ls engine light is on, engines shakes badly when started, sometimes the engines shuts itself off, sometimes when the accelerator is pressed down the vehicle doesn't accelerate

Unfortunately, it could be a lot of things. The cheapest thing to replace would be the fuel fliter. I doubt if that's the problem, but it's worth a shot before buying the more expensive parts that may be defective. The fuel filter is under the car, probably attached to the driver's side frame rail. 

My next guess would be the ignition control module. After that, I would replace the TPS (throttle position sensor). Finally, the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor could also be the problem.
