Shift Cable

My transmission is stuck in 2nd gear. I disconnected the linkage to the tranny and the tranny shifts manually through all the gears and into park but it seems the shifter or shift cable is stuck where its at in 2nd gear. Any possible solutions to this problem would be greatly appreaciated.
