Death At Faring Point Problem

I have a Mac and am running Snow Leopard. In Death at Faring Point, I am stuck at the point where I'm supposed to use the branch I've sawed off the dead tree to get the wood plank in the water. No matter what I do, this isn't working. I've gone to the strategy guide in my Collector's Edition, as well as other guides, and cannot figure out why I'm having this problem. Please advise.
